A consummate career-woman
Over the last thirty years, Ann Alexander has built an exceptional career across a range of disciplines. From law to business consultancy and from communications training to broadcasting, Ann’s winning combination of business skills, innovative approach and driving ambition has ensured success in all her career paths.
Perhaps best known for her groundbreaking work in the medical law field, Ann’s firm Alexander Harris gained a formidable reputation through its accomplished handling of numerous high-profile cases. One of the first law firms to specialize in the medical negligence field, its tireless campaigns to obtain justice for clients led to many changes in NHS practices and patient services. In 2006, Ann merged Alexander Harris with Irwin Mitchell, the fourth largest law firm in the UK, and became a consultant. Although still frequently contacted about issues surrounding her cases from before the merger, Ann has now left the arena of full-time legal practice. A recent development in her legal career is her involvement with The Legal Alliance (TLA). Launched in February 2009 to combat the Legal Services Act 2006, TLA is a national network of law firms which markets the services of its members to consumers and businesses within each firm’s local area through partnerships with major brands.
Since May 2007, Ann has concentrated on developing her consultancy and training work. Her decision to do this was mainly based on the many approaches she received from legal and other professionals who were looking for advice on how to better develop themselves and their businesses. She operates as a self-employed business consultant providing advice on all aspects of business development. Ann also forms one half of the Alexander Macdonald partnership which specializes in media and communications training and consultancy. In addition, Ann has acted as strategic consultant with Oakridge Training and Consulting. Based in the north of England Oakridge provides a wide range of training, coaching and advisory services for businesses of all types and sizes.
Documentary maker & Broadcaster
After founding Alexander Harris, Ann embarked on a strategy to turn to her advantage the media attention that her higher-profile cases inevitably attracted. Always available for a quote, Ann soon became sought after whenever an angle was needed on medico-legal matters and related issues. Soon, Ann became a regular contributor and an informed commentator on a wide range of TV and radio programmes. These included BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme, You and Yours, PM, World at One, Law in Action, Women’s Hour and Newsnight. More recently, Ann has been a presenter on BBC Radio Manchester’s Business Programme and contributes to City Talk 105.9FM. She is now a documentary maker and has so far researched, written and presented four documentary programmes for BBC Radio 4, and an “Inside Out” half hour special for BBC 1. Ann has more documentary work in the pipeline and is always looking for new ideas.
